FILUMS

Brave
This was enjoyable, though not groundbreaking. I hope that it didn't have its origins in Sarah Palin's mama grizzly, because I'd hate to owe anything good to her. It was great to see a female-centered drama, and the characters were entertaining. The little brothers especially were hilarious. The character design in its gender disparity (mom and dad) was a little annoying, especially considering the theme of gender equality. I was confused at the time period as well (the invaders were Roman? Vikings? Picts? All of the above?). It was funny how everyone's Scottish accent (but no Scottish vocab) was appropriate to the setting (if not the time period), unlike in How to Tame Your Dragon, where Vikings in... Vikingland had Scottish accents, except for the main character with his American accent. The magic stuff didn't make a lot of sense (the sunlight has to hit the mom? the boys turn back too?) and I feel like the wisps were part of an earlier draft that never got developed. But there were definitely enough laughs and feel good moments to make this worthwhile.

Ted
I enjoyed the Boston jokes (though the accents were inconsistent). I hear this is similar to Paul, but seeing as I never saw Paul, I was able to enjoy it. The Flash parts were definitely the highlight, but there were a number of quick interspliced funny scenes that are quite memorable (and that format reminded me of the similar tendency on Family Guy). Another movie where the magic didn't make sense (eating and drinking??) and the end is a return to the status quo, though hopefully with a biiiit more personal growth.

Abe Lincoln, Vampire Hunter
Well, this movie was NOT SUBTLE at all. And it's true that the treatment of slavery and vampirism could have been much more horrific if they had treated both subjects with more delicacy. The historical inaccuracies abound, but this is after all the story we want to tell ourselves, not the actual story. Bad guys looove slavery, and good guys haaate slavery! Lincoln fighting the southern vampires on top of a train with his One Black Friend! Sudden Harriet Tubman brings the White House silver intact to the front lines. But the plot was pretty internally consistent, there was a lot of good action, and, most importantly DOMINIC COOPER BEING AWESOME. I wish they had kept the book ending in there, where he and Abe steal off to be awesome vampires that fight vampires together.

Dark Shadows
I used to watch bits of this when it was on repeats on the Scifi channel, so I was curious about this movie. I feel like the beginning was interesting, but it kind of fell apart at the end. (Sudden werewolf whut?) The ending was kind of open ended (by which I mean they got some 'splainin to do) and felt open for a sequel. Helena was a hilarious BAMF and her story is one aspect also I feel like they need a sequel for. (She will rise from the deeps like Angelus!) I liked Barnabas/Angelique, and their relationship was the only real drama in the film. There were some pretty amusing parts, but most of the jokes were used up in the trailer, and Hocus Pocus did the "what is this hard tar substance" joke way better. The ending turned cartoonish and like Death Becomes Her. The characters deserved a better resolution. But the visuals were pretty!
