The usual vid commentary babble

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nobunagaota, [livejournal.com profile] glaphix, [livejournal.com profile] onlymesmerized, and [livejournal.com profile] welsh_briar for watching multiple versions and listening to me whine. I could use a beta who's a vidder, though, if anyone wants to volunteer.

Lyrics

Temptation
by VAST

I went in the desert
I went searching for the truth
I stumbled across you
And I know you're not the truth

I went in the ocean
I came looking for some love
All I found is that I found
I haven't found enough

I stand alone now I stand alone
But can you save me from myself

You are my temptation
You are my temptation to
Do what I knew was wrong

You are my temptation
You are my temptation to
Do what I knew was wrong

What I knew was wrong was you

I stand alone now I stand alone
but can you save me from myself

Oh please

They've been killing children
And nobody seems to care
They've been laughing at my god
My god I wouldn't dare

You are my temptation
You are my temptation

i've seen the footage of M and K at the submarine base a hundred of times and am quite familiar with them, but never have i got the feeling that they were about to kiss; and yet somewhere in the sequence you strung those images together gave me a jolt and for an instant that was the illusion that struck me..

and then the double-quickening sequence surprised me, because everytime i've seen it before i was distracted by the cheesiness of the now-outdated special effects (through no fault of the show itself: it was the best they could do at the time), and yet in this vid it was forceful and thrummed with the impact the characters must have felt. i think apart from the haunting resonating background chorus that gave everything a timeless, reality-bleached atmosphere, your cutting made the electrical charges surge through not just the physical plane, but the emotional too, and that's why it's so jarring (in the good way) i think.

another thing that moved me so was how you showed the many, many times M had placed the blade against someone's throat, and the many when a blade was at his own throat. the countless times he dealt heartlessly with many people, and the countless times he suffered abuse at another's hands. how he's come through such sharp rage and deep crushing sorrow. like the double-quickening part, it shows yet again how intricately his love - those who love him, those whom he love - is always tightly entwined with violence; he loves with his life and he loves on the edge of death.

there's also just the fact that his eyes are so *forceful* sometimes, when he lets it be like that. you've chosen some of the most "disturbing" (and therefore yummiest) footage of him letting his age show in those eyes. unlike the times when he's just playing mild, these glimpses where he stares out from behind that eerie green/hazel eyes have that ethereal quality that reminds us he's just not quite like the rest of the world, that there's something strange and terrible peeking out from the past.

above all, especially this left an impression -- the juxtaposition of Ben Adams' genuine joy on his face while he laughed, carefree, on the carriage, against the ruthlessness and cold-blooded efficiency with which he wielded the gun (a weapon no other character on the show could handle with such ease and apparent expertise) when he was in black leather. the lack of expression when he held a gun in his hand, the clinical way he took aim, the natural confidence that makes the weapon look like an extension of his limb, the almost peaceful deliberation when he slowly unsheathes his sword.. these all contrast so sharply with the other times when he snarls in agonizing apprehension, when he smiles in deadly calculation, and when he rages and despairs in excruciating loss and pain.

it is such a genius piece of audio-visual fusion.. i was completely stunned. i can't even begin to describe how much i love this and respect your artistry. i didn't mean to spam your journal, but this is the only way i can express my appreciation -- it's really a masterpiece and i just find it very hard to believe it's your first HL vid. it is so powerful, haunting, yet poignant all at once. thank you for sharing this. ♥
