Push Lyrics
Artist: Moist

A little bit more than I ever wanted
A little bit more than you could ever say
Did you really think that I'd forgotten?
Kicked out the windshield, water coming in
Fade away, fade away

Push just a little too late
Is this what you want? What you need?
Is this what you wanted me to be?
Always loved me strapped to you
Lock it down and drive me through

I tried to give more than you thought I'd take now
Taking more than you could ever say
Push come to shove you kicked me in the head
You knock me down I ripped the handle off again
I wanted more than this, wanted more than this
Fade away, fade away

Push just a little too late
Is this what you want? What you need?
Is this what you wanted me to be?
Always loved me strapped to you
Lock it down and drive me through

Hands gripped to the wheel held too tight to feel
Face pressed to the glass, please don't ask
One more breath, one more, it's alright
I could never give enough, have enough, be enough
You could never stand to stay there
Only only only, fade away, fade away

Push just a little too late
Is this what you want? What you need?
Is this what you wanted me to be?
Always loved me strapped to you
Lock it down and drive me through
Push just a little too late
I wanted more than this
I expected more than this

I'm sorry this is um, less than stellar, you guys. And I'm also sorry it took me like six months of not working on it to finally get it finished. Wah.

Let me just preface this vid by saying that RAYK AND FRASER ARE MARRIED IN CANADA FOREVER. This vid is just kind of a... write your own happy ending! Yeah!

I'm trying to show in this vid the frustration RayK feels at Fraser dominating their personal and professional relationships, and how he's unable to push to effectively change the power balance. That frustration comes out in a temptation to do violence against Fraser and his explosions of temper against other people.

The lyric matching is pretty straightforward I think. A few notes:

Fraser and Ray's thwarted kisses leading up to Ray's post-Stella dancing juxtaposed with Ray and Fraser's partnership signal is supposed to imply that Ray wants an equal (romantic) relationship with Fraser, not just their working partnership.

I don't know if Ray and Fraser here are having sex or not, and frankly it doesn't matter, because this vid is not about sex or romance. It's about power.

Ray wants more than the working relationship he has with Fraser, and then in the next section he also wants to be a better police officer on his own than he has been, or has been allowed to be.

Ray tries it out in Canada, but the pattern of their relationship is already set, and it's too late for him to change. Which is kind of set up in the Ray Vecchio/CotW part, where it's implied that RayK is forcing himself to go along with Fraser in CotW because he's afraid of losing him either to RayV or to Canada (because "you could never stand to stay there"). But it doesn't work out, so he goes back to Chicago. And they are sad woobies.

But uh. It could still be a happy ending! Somehow... There could be *personal growth*. And a reencounter! And angsty sex! Everyone likes that.

Wow, this is a great vid. I'd never heard this song before, but it totally works with what you're trying to show, Ray's frustration at the dynamic of their relationship. Though, it's got a happy ending, at least in my mind. Ray finally gets the right push and he and Fraser do ride off into the sunset together. Fraser might be standing at the back of the sled, but it's Ray who's got the real balance. Great work. I really enjoyed it.

Wow! Normally I don't take the time to check out a lot of DS vids, but you had me curious.

I really like the speed and intensity you put into it, and I noticed all of the little details too - like the gradual closeups, black and white, etc. Great job :)

This is great. I'll have to go back and rewatch a few times to get the details, but yeah. It's really a good showcase of Ray's frustration. And he's right, because Fraser does manage to get people to do what he wants them to without his ever having to actually ask. I love him to bits, but he's a passive-aggressive little bastard, isn't he? *g*

I think he comes by the passive-aggressive stuff honestly. I doubt that neither his father nor his grandparents would have put up with anything resembling open defiance, so Fraser would have had to develop really good stealth skills early on. And it doesn't make him a bad person--he's a very, very good person, often to a fault. It's a coping skill, is all. I still think Fraser would have ended up a lot different if his mother had lived.

Very nice! I second [livejournal.com profile] primroseburrows's comment on showcasing Ray's frustration. (And I'd completely forgotten that this song existed - I was surprised when the vid started and I recognized the music :p)

wow.. this vid is so expertly put together, that quite a number of parts of it made me think i'd never seen the footage before. the special effects, the cut, the sense of swirling nonstop motion are all so brilliant, i was holding my breath the entire time. there are also many close-ups on RayK's expression that i never really paid attention to while watching the episodes; the same goes for the thoughtful looks from Fraser -- i didn't know those faces he made lasted more than a couple of seconds, and yet your vid somehow feels almost like an entirely different show (not the content/characterization, but it feels like a totally new episode that hadn't been aired).

thank you so much for sharing this gem! ♥

That's some fabulous stringing together of clips and shots there. I love the fast-paced cutting, it's really energetic and great. I don't think I've ever seen a vid put together so well. I haven't seen all the eps yet, so I can't agree or disagree yet about what you're saying, but just as a piece of work I LOVE it. Wow.

Loved it! Your editing was wonderful-the quick cuts, the zooms, just really well paced! I'm all for the RayK/Fraser happy ending but, ya gotta love the angst too!

Mind if I ask what program you used for this?

Just popped in to say how much I love this vid, fenlings.

The song, and your fast cuts and editing give the whole thing a spinning, jumping, frustrated twitchiness that fits Ray to a T.

I love the flash of BeatCop!Ray seeing himself in the mirror. Its a moment of literal and metaphorical self-reflection, that makes that next segment really work for me.

The clips for "I could never give enough, have enough, be enough
You could never stand to stay there" still floor me every time I watch this.

Ooo, this is fabulous! It captures Ray so beautifully -- this is his life, so frustrating! *pets* I love the way you use a lot of atypical clips, like Fraser waving Ray back in Asylum, but not the closeup on his hand. And nice use of croppping in on elements of what's in frame.

(But of course I have to have the happy ending. There at the end, when Ray's in the hallway? He's going to pop his head up, turn right around, go to the airport, track Fraser down and push back. :-)

I have to pop on here and leave feedback, because I believe in feedback! But I am afraid whatever I write is going to be woefully inadequate, so...I may come back and leave more later, when my head's clearer, or something.

Anyway, I loved this vid! It's totally intense, jumpy, SO VERY RayK I can't believe it, and yeah, sad and frustrated and all that, but that is FINE...at least, for me, for what I use vids for--besides the sheer entertainment value, anyway. I like vids for the inspiration they give me, and this vid shows me a Ray at the beginning of a story, a Ray with all his troubles, a Ray lacking that relationship in his life which will finally give it meaning. Unlike Fraser, Ray is a guy who is not fine on his own, he NEEDS that partnership, that duet, like he needs air, and it's not enough just to catch bad guys, even in partnership. He needs the intimate relationship, too, and when he tries to find it in anyone else but Fraser, he fails.

The song you chose couldn't have been more perfect for RayK, so I definitely see why you wanted to vid this one for him. The head-kicking, windshield-kicking-out underwater, even "push just a little too late"--they're all RAY. Every line is Ray. I adored the fast cuts and the other effects, the B&W, the fades, the unfocusing, or whatever you call that. Everything worked so beautifully. You're clearly a master vidder. I get that you're not happy with how this one came out, but I can find no fault in it. The song doesn't call for a happy ending, and you didn't succumb to the need to provide one. And yet, it's not sad, either, because the story's not over! The viewer is left thinking about what might be next. Really, I see it as a great illustration of our physical, impulsive, act first/ask later cop, who actually has to be that way because of how incredibly vulnerable he is, both physically (because he continually takes on adversaries who are stronger and better equipped) and emotionally (I don't need to give an example there, I'm sure).

Finally, there is no one in the known universe who is hotter when pulling a gun on someone than Ray/CKR, and I absolutely loved the sheer number and juxtaposition of Ray's gun-drawing shots! *melts* I would make a very bad criminal in dueSouth's Chicago, because when RayK pulled his gun on me, I'm sure I would spontaneously orgasm. And then maybe faint. Hee!

So, wow, apparently I had more to say than I thought I did. And yet I don't know how well I expressed my reaction, which was hard to put into words. I think the vid's so visceral, as is RayK, that my response was similar, and words were hard to find (not that I ever let that stop me from writing reams of them, eh?). But this was just...jumpy, impulsive, dangerous, vulnerable, uncertain, insecure (oh, patrolman Ray in the mirror! ♥), scared, loving, committed, keep-on-kicking RayK. All that I love about him. So I think the vid succeeds, and I adore you, as ever, for making it.

What utterly floors me about this vid is it's musicality - how incredibly organic it feels. I have stared some at it now, and I think what I want to say is something along these lines: Wow! How cool are you, huh?

I mean, you lay the pictures not "just" alongside the text (and yes, woobie Ray angst is created by that bit, and I want to snuggle him) but it is as if you had taken the note-sheets and molded the clips all around the whole score *flails*. I love that so, so much. I mean, you cut to the bass, to the snare drums, to the singers (fore- and background if I caught that right, for crying out loud), to the synchopic (? *kicks babelfish and her dictionary* off-beat anyhow) guitar-solo-part, then against the synchopic guitar part *flails more*. And of course always around that little

motive, the song has going on.

And (unlike this comment *g*) it is not all over the place. At all.

Oh, and it looks pretty. So thank you very much for sharing!

Lastly: There could be *personal growth*. And a reencounter! And angsty sex! Everyone likes that.

Yes, that. Exactly.
