1. SPACE BATTLESHIP KIMUTAKU YAMATO! HOW did I not know about this movie until today?! (Probably the same way I didn't know about Gunless before a few months ago - not reading my flist. /o\) This was a fun romp, but there were the typical problems with plot confusion and trying to get to know 20-odd characters that comes when compressing 26 episodes into one movie. I watched with
paranoid_ninja and now he wants to watch the anime, but I don't know if I can take 26 episodes... (We've hit season 5 of our B5 rewatch, so now he is getting antsy. CRUSADE OR BUST!) Meisa did a pretty good job, though I can see why they wanted Sawajiri Erika at first. She and Kimutaku were good together, except for the squick that comes from him being 15 years older than her.
Their relationship was based on one two-second warp sex (relative time).
paranoid_ninja: OMG THE DOWN ARROW I CANT STOP LOOKING
fenlings: ahaha
fenlings: APPLY MEISA HERE
paranoid_ninja: JUST FOLLOW THE ARROW
fenlings: LMAO
fenlings: HAVE U EVER DONE IT IN WARP BABY
fenlings: DID THE EARTH MOVE FOR YOU TOO
paranoid_ninja: lol
fenlings: that was quick
paranoid_ninja: YES I DISCOVERED THE HOLY LAND
paranoid_ninja: oh iskandar? right
It not only made them both suddenly lovey dovey and kissing windows at each other
fenlings: why so nice all of a sudden?
fenlings: i guess warp sex really is that good
but also MADE A WARP BABY.
paranoid_ninja: he IMPREGNATED HER?
fenlings: WARP SEX IS AWESOME OK
Watching Kimutaku's acting here though, he seemed to make more self-indulgent choices than I'm used to with him. I always admired how absolutely natural his acting seemed, but here he had a lot of facial twitches and self-indulgent delays. Speaking of self-indulgent delays, lol the script at the end was one huge one with everyone speechifying as they said goodbye instead of, you know, SAVING THE PLANET?
paranoid_ninja: can you people hurry up
paranoid_ninja: there's a nuclear reaction building
2. NINO'S MOVIES. I feel like I should watch Gantz to see what all the fuss is about, and Ooku because "an unknown disease kills most of the male population, leading to a matriarchal society in which the Ōoku becomes a harem of men serving the now female shogun" DO WANT.
3. TOOOMAAAA. I have Ningen Shikkaku, Hanamizuki, Genji, and Seaside Motel ready for
glaphix and I to have our TOMA FESTIVAL. (As a prelude to our ultimate plan of kidnapping him and moving to Hawaii to be traveling notaries, of course.) I'm also super excited about Bokura ga Ita.
4. KENSHIN. I literally could not do anything but watch this trailer over and over for a week. HOW SO AMAZING? EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS PERFECT. (Though I can't identify that white-haired guy. It looks like Enishi, but surely not...) They are also coming out with new OVAs that retell the Kyoto arc from Misao's perspective (hopefully MOAR AOSHI), which I'll have to watch with
glaphix's boy, who loves Kenshin ALMOST as much as I do. Haha, I made
paranoid_ninja watch the Kenshin OVAs 1 and 2 and a few eps of the series to prepare him for 2, and he was angry at me for days about how 2 ended (though I totally warned him!) The mangaka apparently also thought the ending of 2 was too sad for poor Kenshin, but I thought it was good! (Hysterically sobbing good, but still good.) Of course I watched this all many years ago now, so
glaphix's boy is trying to tempt me into a rewatch but I am remaining strong. The mangaka is also starting a reboot of the manga, which I will reserve judgment on until I hear more about wtf that means.
5. AMERICAN MOVIES WHUT. I keep seeing all these comparisons of Hunger Games and Twilight, but for me the two have nothing in common except that I am avoiding all canon and consuming only parodies of both. For Twilight, though, I avoid it because the story is depressingly bad, and for Hunger Games I avoid it because the story is badly depressing. But I quite enjoy Gyzym's Hunger Games parodies, and the other parodies I've come across. And Jennifer Lawrence is a hilarious darling, so I'm glad she'll be able to continue with both HG and XM franchises.
Overall, with Avengers, Snow White, and Kenshin, this summer is going to be epiccc.
